Subsume Studios at Underground Atlanta is the hub of cool, pop culture and fandom for many aficionados of comics, animation, art, design, games and more.

Thursday's event was filled with art and book fans and they stopped in to say hello. This weekend downtown Atlanta is filled with Dragon Con attendees and it is always a good time to meetup and catch up.

We played Dungeons and Dragons, discussed AI Art, Creative Workflows and had a small discussion on how Writers and Illustrators work together.

Stay tuned for more as Underground Atlanta and Subsume Studios show the world how ATL is full of talent!

Azteca Moderno, the 13 Aztec Gods.

I am sharing the sketches for my upcoming coloring pages that will be free this weekend at Kirkwood Library and next weekend at National Center for Civil and Human Rights for the LatinX Heritage Program - Azteca Moderno

I started with 7 with @SketchableApp because I want to paint seven paintings, but then I drew a grid of 9 in Fresco for the sketches and I decided to go along with it.
Then I created the illustrator file for the coloring pages and I created a grid of 12, so I adjusted my sketches in Fresco and when I finished the 12, I realized that the way the Azteca calendar counts months is 13.

So now I will finish 13 Gods and Goddesses for the coloring pages. . whew!
Listen to your creativity!

In the Aztec world, skeletal imagery was a symbol of fertility, health and abundance, alluding to the close symbolic links between life and death

Mictēcacihuātl - Left
Lady of the Dead

Mictēcacihuātl, (meaning "Lady of the Dead"), in Aztec mythology, is a death deity and consort of Mictlāntēuctli, god of the dead and ruler of Mictlān, the lowest level of the underworld.
As Queen of Mictlan (the underworld), the goddess Mictēcacihuātl rules over the spirits of the afterlife with her husband, Mictlantecuhtli.

The Aztecs recognised death as a natural part of the circle of life. Instead of insulting the dead with mourning or sadness, the lives of the deceased are honoured. This tradition is still continued today in the festival now known as Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which highlights the very different attitude Mexicans have towards death. It becomes colourful and joyful – a grand celebration of life.

Coyolxāuhqui - Right
Moon Goddess, Headress with Stars (brothers) in her hair
Coyolxāuhqui, "Painted with Bells") is a daughter of the priestess Cōātlīcue ("Serpent Skirt"). She was the leader of her brothers, the Centzon Huitznahuas ("Four Hundred Huiztnaua"). She led her brothers in an attack against their mother, Cōātlīcue, when they learned she was pregnant, convinced she dishonored them all. The attack is thwarted by Coyolxāuhqui's other brother, Huitzilopochtli, the national deity of the Mexicas.
Huitzilopochtli tossed Coyolxauhqui's head into the sky where it became the Moon, so that his mother would be comforted in seeing her daughter in the sky every night, and that her scattered brothers became the Southern Star deities

Sun God Tonatiuh - Head
Tonatiuh "Movement of the Sun" was an Aztec sun deity of the daytime sky and ruled the cardinal direction of east. According to Aztec Mythology, Tonatiuh was known as "The Fifth Sun" and was given a calendar name of naui olin, which means "4 Movement".

Aztec God Quetzalcoatl - Background Below
Quetzalcoatl was related to gods of the wind, of the planet Venus, of the dawn, of merchants and of arts, crafts and knowledge. He was also the patron god of the Aztec priesthood, of learning and knowledge.

Nahui Ollin - Center
Nahui Ollin has been described as the fifth sun over our current world.
Nahui Ollin has been described as "the sun (Tōnatiuh) in its four movements. "When the fourth sun ended, Nahui Ollin emerged "from the remnant matter of an earlier age of humanity."

Day 7 Of 7 Day #DigitalChallenge w Microsoft Surface Pro 4 and Surface Pen

Day 7 of 7 Day #DigitalChallenge is here and we are drawing with the top device in the list of drawing tablets I own.

I have been drawing on 7 different devices on 7 different days show that we do not need the most expensive tools to create impactful art, Even in the digital space, there are different levels of access to tools for every budget.

Day 5: https://youtu.be/LNuWJCMkGf0
Day 6: https://youtu.be/1wH_XHQ-Lz8

Many years ago, way before the Surface line of tablets, I approached the Microsoft Store to feature some drawing sessions on their devices. I do not recall what drawing tablet Microsoft was selling but they agreed to host a couple of drawing demos.

I had never drawn digitally at this point!

I have been working with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop since 2001/2002 but had not taken the opportunity to draw on the screen. I did own an HP laptop that had a pen enabled screen when I started with Illustrator, but it never occurred to me to draw with it. I do no know why.

In any case, those demo days at the Microsoft Store in 2011 were my first time trying to draw digitally. The store had some devices and I remember using a Samsung tablet running windows, I drew on the basic drawing app, I think this was Windows 7. Windows 8 was coming and it was called Metro at that time.

Then the Surface drops and I know I want one! By then I had started to work with my Wacom Bamboo tablet and got familiar with current tools enough to realize that the best tablets were the ones that came with a pen.

By the time the Surface 3 was on the market, I was ready to buy one at full price. The next year the iPad Pro came to the market and now it was a race for the soul of an artist!

Since 2016 I have owned both, the iPad Pro and the Surface Pro 4 and my admiration for both machines is still strong. I do not have a preference of one over the other, however, I do see the value in each machine and their capabilities to help me produce the art I need.

I still own a Surface Pro 4, the one on this video is a 16GB RAM, i7 Processor and 500GB SSD. More than enough power to help me with my work in the Adobe Creative Cloud including Premiere, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Audition and of course, Sketchable App.

Day 6 Of 7 Day #DigitalChallenge W iPad Pro and Adobe Sketch

Day 6 of 7 Day #DigitalChallenge is all about Adobe Sketch and Adobe Draw, 2 free awesome apps for sketching and drawing that lead to a professional illustration.
https://youtu.be/1wH_XHQ-Lz8

I am drawing on 7 different devices on 7 different days. A lot of times we think that we need better/pricier tools to create the art our talents deserve but the reality is we can create impactful art with very simple tools, even in the digital space.

Day 4: https://youtu.be/yJimb8nF2Rk
Day 5: https://youtu.be/LNuWJCMkGf0

Ever since the iPad made it to the market, I knew I had to get my hands on one and try to draw with it! By then I already owned and had tried to draw with, a Bamboo Tablet by Wacom. I say I tried, it was a very rough start to my digital drawing training.

As time went on, I admired the iPad from afar and got my hands on a Samsung Note 10 and then a Note 10.1 and discovered how well made the Note was.

Eventually, I started collecting devices and aftermarket pens to draw digitally, pens from Adonit and Wacom, but nothing really worked well with the iPad.

I’ve had the iPad 2, the iPad Air, the iPad mini and finally: the iPad Pro. Once I heard that Apple was finally releasing the iPad Pro, I was ready to draw with some of the best apps in the App Store including Adobe Draw and Adobe Sketch.

I am still enjoying myself!
