How do you grow your Art Career?
I have mentors and advisors they help me stay focused on my goals designed to grow my career I started drawing as a child, my first goal was to copy what I saw around me, cartoons, East LA murals, comic book heroes. My art goals expanded to find my style of art, then on to expressing my creativity, then on to telling a story. Each goal I set out to accomplish gave me a chance to grow as an artist.
Never in my youth did it occur to me to grow up to become an artist. I wasn't aware that Artist was a career! I never imagined that there were people out in the world getting paid to draw comics, cartoons, illustrations and even architecture!
Thats all I needed to know to make my life options very clear: I love drawing, I would like to have a career drawing, lets find a way to make that money!
Its been 20 years since I started my Professional Artist career. It took a lot of trial and error, a lot of learning along the way, a lot of patience to figure out how to create a business where art is sold and my bills paid for.
Luckily I have reached out to people in the Art and Business industry to ask questions, get advice and help me grow as an artist and a professional. That list is super long to thank but I assure you that I have kept those people around because I still want to continue to grow. Im not done yet!
We all need someone to help us in the pursuit of our goals. We need someone to help us identify our goals.
